About City

The Italian city of Rome Roma is the historic capital of the Roma Provincia (province), the Lazio region (region), and the Italian country. Rome sits on the Tiber River, about 15 miles (24 kilometers) inland from the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the middle part of the Italian peninsula. Rome is the Eternal City, once the capital of an ancient republic and empire whose armies and polity defined the Western world in antiquity and left seemingly indelible imprints thereafter, the spiritual and physical seat of the Roman Catholic Church, and the site of major pinnacles of artistic and intellectual achievement.

For nearly a millennium, Rome ruled over all of Europe's civilizations, but it eventually crumbled and fell into decay. By the late Middle Ages, Rome had been physically maimed, economically immobilized, politically senile, and militarily powerless, but it remained a world power—as an idea. Rome's power as a lawgiver, teacher, and builder continued to spread across Europe. Although the popes' position was sometimes tenuous from the sixth through the fifteenth centuries, Rome experienced grandeur as the birthplace of Christianity and gradually regained its power and wealth, re-establishing itself as a place of beauty, a source of learning, and a metropolis of the arts.

The Campagna, or Roman countryside, was one of central Italy's final locations to be populated in antiquity. The city of Rome was erected on a fortified hill that dominated the last downstream, high-banked river crossing, where the Tiber has traversed thanks to a midstream island. The old city rose up around a set of hills known as the Palatine Hills, which were originally numbered as seven. The Capitoline, the Quirinal, the Viminal, the Esquiline, the Caelian, and the Aventine are the other hills.

Rome is still a contradictory city today, with its historic and rich neighborhoods coexisting with enormous swaths of poverty in the city's outskirts and among its immigrant populations. Furthermore, despite being the capital of Italy and the seat of Roman Catholicism, Rome has never been able to match the prominence of other national capitals like London or Paris. Milan (the "moral capital"), Turin (the "industrial capital"), and Florence (the "capital of Italian art") have long contested Rome's position. The Eternal City's place within Italy was in jeopardy at the start of the twenty-first century, since the idea of decentralization—particularly the devolution of some political authorities to the regions—remained a persistent political concern.
